Job description

We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of sedimentology and sediment geochemistry at Ghent University, Belgium. The position is for up to 2.5 years (20–30 months), depending on the exact status of the researcher. The selected candidate will work on the development of sediment inorganic geochemical tracers of hydrological variability for application in paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental research. He/she will analyze modern sediment samples from selected rivers and fjords in Chilean Patagonia, investigate fjord sediment transport mechanisms, and study the relations between hydrodynamics and sediment composition. The selected candidate will work in close collaboration with 3 PhD students exploring the signature of glacier variability and Glacial Lake Outburst Flood occurrence in fjord sediments.

The postdoctoral fellow will join an international team of 20+ scientists at the Renard Centre of Marine Geology ( He/she will also work in close collaboration with scientists at the COPAS Sur-Austral, Chile (

The project involves intensive laboratory work focused on sediment geochemistry, grain size and mineralogy, and potentially field expeditions in Patagonia as well as numerical modeling (in collaboration with GJ Weltje, KU Leuven, Belgium), depending on the specific interests of the applicant. The starting date is flexible between April 1st and June 1st, 2018.

We offer a competitive salary (2000–2500 EUR net/month, depending on status) and compensation for the use of public transport (train) and bike to/from work. Additional information regarding living in Ghent and working at Ghent University can be found on
