Job description

The laboratory of Intestinal Host-Microbe Communication, headed by Prof. Andy Wullaert (https://ggig.be/lab_andywullaert.php) and affiliated to Ghent University as well as the VIB Center for Inflammation Research (https://www.irc.ugent.be/index.php?id=mlapeople), offers a dynamic working environment within a stimulating scientific surrounding. You will be part of an international, young, enthusiastic, motivated team using English as the main language.

Our laboratory performs in vivo research using mouse models as well as ex vivo research using primary cells in order to fundamentally understand the relationship between the host and the inhabitants of the intestinal lumen in homeostasis and during inflammatory responses, as well as upon viral, bacterial or parasitic infectious encounters. For this purpose we have a rather large collection of mouse models available carrying genetic deficiencies (full-body and cell type specific) or missense mutations in inflammatory signaling pathways. These include TLR-, NLR- and RLR-initiated signaling pathways as well as important cellular processes such as inflammasome activation, autophagy, ubiquitination and various cell death modes. We also have mouse models for Inflammatory Bowel Disease, colorectal cancer, Auto-Inflammatory Diseases (CAPS, FMF, …), as well as gastro-intestinal viral, bacterial and parasitic infections running in the lab. The specific project for this position deals with the identification of microbiota metabolites influencing systemic inflammation in mice. The project will use gnotobiotic mouse models in the context of genetically imposed spontaneous inflammatory diseases in order to identify metabolites interfering with specific inflammatory signaling pathways.

Our team is embedded within the VIB-UGent Center for Inflammation Research, a multidisciplinary research center focusing on the molecular mechanisms of inflammation in allergy, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and cancer (http://www.irc.ugent.be/index.php?id=aboutirc), and that hosts excellent transgenic, bio-imaging and flow cytometry core facilities; as well as an SPF and a germ-free animal facility. Our team is also part of the Ghent Gut Inflammation Group (https://ggig.be/index.php), a Ghent University consortium bringing together multiple research groups investigating the various aspects of gastrointestinal physiology. The embedding of our team in the IRC and the GGIG ensures an environment enabling smooth interdisciplinary collaborations.

Profile of the candidate

  • The candidate must hold a PhD, or should be expecting to obtain a PhD in the near future.
  • The candidate should have experience in the areas of Host-Microbe Interactions and Mucosal Immunology in the intestinal tract.
  • The candidate must hold a Felasa C diploma (or equivalent) allowing him/her to work with laboratory animals.
  • The required skills include: working with mouse models, big data analysis experience, molecular and cell biological techniques in vitro and in vivo.
  • Candidates must be proficient in oral and written English, have excellent communication and multi-tasking skills, be team-oriented, proactive and results-driven.
