Job description

Advanced project-related research on the postglacial climate history of East Africa using lake-sediment archives, and knowledge transfer on this subject to junior scientific staff (MSc & PhD candidates) through training in diverse methods of geological , geochemical and biological analysis of those sediment records as well as their radiometric dating. Regional integration of the resulting reconstructions, taking into account the mechanisms of tropical climate dynamics at the relevant time scales, and how these dynamics find expression in climate-model simulations.

Profile of the candidate

Holder of a PhD degree in Biology, Geology, Geography or in a discipline considered equivalent and relevant by the evaluation committee. For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a NARIC certificate of equivalence is also required. These degree requirements must be fulfilled no later than the start of the appointment, foreseen on 01/02/2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Advanced expertise in the analysis and interpretation of lake-sediment archives from dynamic and preferably tropical systems, demonstrable on the basis of international publications as first or corresponding author. Expertise on multiple methods of sediment analysis, of geological/geochemical and biological nature, is considered high added value.

Expertise or strong interest in processes of tropical climate dynamics at the relevant timescales, and ambition to involve output of climate-model simulations in regional integration of the reconstructions achieved through this project.

Expertise as advisor or mentor of MSc and/or PhD students in this or related research disciplines, demonstrable through co-authorships on the publications of those students.
