Job description

The department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication at Ghent University invites applications for a one-year Postdoctoral research assistant (50%), to commence September 1st 2019. The position is part of the research project “Interpreter-mediated psychotherapy for asylum-seekers: societal needs, communicative challenges, therapeutic potentials”, carried out by Prof. Claudio Scarvaglieri. The project will investigate interpreter-mediated psychotherapy and will be based on recordings of interpreter-mediated therapy, which will be analyzed using linguistic methods of conversation analysis and discourse analysis. The successful applicant will establish contacts to institutions and individuals that carry out interpreter-mediated psychotherapy and will guide the process of raising and transcribing data (recordings of therapy sessions). He/ she will research and analyze relevant literature and support the data analysis. It is also expected that the successful applicant takes part in the process of writing a research grant.

Profile of the candidate

The chosen postdoctoral researcher will have

- Excellent knowledge of linguistic approaches of conversation analysis and/ or discourse analysis

- Experience working with and analyzing conversational data

- Experience in writing grant applications and evidence of having acquired external research funding

- Contacts to researchers in the field of linguistic research on psychotherapy

- Native or near-native competence of English and German.

 

Competence of Dutch will be considered an asset.
