Job description

In the framework of research collaborations with industry and research institutes, we have a vacant position for a post-doctoral researcher within the PProGRess team, member of the UGent expertise Centre for X-ray Tomography ( In this research project we aim to characterize complex mineral compositions both chemically and structurally in 3D. Currently, chemical characterization in 3D remains an unsolved problem and currently requires the use of several imaging and characterization techniques as well as tools for correlative microscopy and appropriate image processing and image analyses. Techniques that are inhouse available are amongst others lab-based X-ray CT imaging, hyperspectral imaging, XRF-CT, FEG-SEM, FIB-SEM and SEM-EDX. Some of those techniques remain new or even under developed in the field of mineral characterization. Means to implement these techniques into a workable workflow as well as exploring the potential to extract qualitative and quantitative information from this data need to be further developed and validated. You will be responsible for the data acquisition (in close collaboration with the PProGRess-UGCT team) and the exploration of techniques such as hyperspectral imaging. You will combine new imaging techniques for mineralogical research and the development of the tools and workflows for the data analysis. You might also have the daily supervision of PhD and master thesis students, and will be in close contact with all collaborators of this research project. Profile of the candidate

Applicant should have:

a PhD degree in Science, Engineering or bio-engineering with strong interest in mineralogy, advanced imaging techniques and/or image processing and image analysis. Experience in X-ray imaging and other structural or chemical characterization tools is a big advantage as well as knowledge on correlative microscopy.
  • an independent and well-organized working style, demanding high quality of your own work. 

  • well-developed social skills directed towards working in an interdisciplinary team, excellent interpersonal and communicative skills.

  • strong motivation to succeed in research, excellent presentation and scientific writing skills 

  • very good to excellent English language skills (verbally and written).
