Job opening for a marine scientist

The Marine Biology Research Group of Ghent University is recruiting a motivated marine scientist to perform experiments using the available mesocosm facilities for meio- and macrobenthos and sediment biogeochemistry research in a context of a changing marine environment and its effects on ecosystem functioning. The successful candidate will develop innovative experiments, preferably involving international partners, run the experiments in the available EMBRC facilities at Ghent University and Marine Station Ostend (VLIZ), analyse the samples, interpret the data based on sound statistical analyses, and publish the results in peer-reviewed journals. The candidate will also internationally promote the use of the experimental facilities and organize public outreach on the results of the experiments. The candidate will join a team involved in experimental benthic research. This team is part of the Marine Biology Research Group, a highly dynamic and international scientific environment. The contract will last 2 years.

Specific experience and competences

The successful candidate

- Holds a PhD in marine sciences, biology or equivalent.

- Has an excellent standard of spoken and written English.

- Has proven expertise with

     o the use of experimental mesocosm facilities which are temperature and/or pH controlled;

     o empirical studies on the effects of global change on benthic ecology and biogeochemistry/ecosystem functioning.

- Has a strong ability to perform statistical data analyses (in R) and to write sound scientific reports and papers in peer-reviewed international journals.

- Has good didactic skills and is willing to teach dedicated guest lectures to master students.
