Job description

We are looking for a talented and motivated student to start a PhD-project in the team of Prof. Lars Vereecke. The lab is studying host-microbiota interactions in mouse models of inflammatory disease and cancer, using state-of-the-art germfree and gnotobiotic mouse technology. We are very much interested in the interaction between the intestinal microbiota and the immune system, during the development of inflammatory disease and cancer. The project involves multiple molecular biology techniques and inflammation assays (e.g. Elisa, QPCR, histology), cellular immunology (flow cytometry), microscopy, microbiology assays and in vivo mouse studies. Unraveling the molecular mechanisms underlying host microbiota interactions in health and disease can open perspectives for novel (microbiota based) therapies for inflammatory diseases and cancer.

The lab of Prof. Lars Vereecke is part of the Ugent/VIB Center for Inflammation Research (IRC) – Belgium, and located at the Ghent University Hospital campus (MRBII - UZ Ghent).

Profile of the candidate

The candidate must meet the eligibility criteria to apply for a personal FWO PhD fellowship (fundamental research or strategic basic research - please consult the FWO website) and have a Felasa B or C degree for experimental animal research. The candidate must have obtained excellent grades during his/her master training, be a critical thinker, highly motivated and perseverant.

How to apply

Please contact Prof. Lars Vereecke (lars.vereecke@irc.vib-ugent.be) for more information regarding the PhD project. Candidates can send their CV and cover letter by email to Prof. Lars Vereecke as soon as possible, and no later than November 11th 2019.
