Job description

Predictive maintenance is an approach to predict future failure points of machine components, so that these can be replaced before failure. In this way, equipment downtime is minimized and the component lifetime is maximized. Future points of failure can be predicted based on past usage data and the observed condition of the components. Advances in data logging (Industry 4.0) and predictive modeling (the so-called AI-hype) have paved the way for the implementation of predictive maintenance approaches in industrial installations.

In this project, we aim to investigate the feasibility of implementing a predictive maintenance policy for some of the key assets of the Janssen Research and Development site in Geel. We are looking for a project-researcher who will be responsible for: (1) inventorying, organizing and wrangling the data needed to build predictive maintenance models; (2) building a proof-of-concept predictive maintenance model for several key assets at the Geel site of Janssen R&D; and (3) the discovery of re-occurring methodological bottlenecks that are worth investigating at an academic level.

Profile of the candidate

· You have a master degree in (bioscience) engineering, computer science, data-analysis, chemistry or similar.

· You are (somewhat) familiar and have a strong interest in data-analysis and machine learning in an industrial setting.

· You have an interest in industrial-scale pharmaceutical equipment (no prior knowledge required but you should be eager to learn about the more technical aspects of, for instance, centrifugal dryers).

· You are interested in doing applied research at an academic level at the level needed to obtain a PhD.

· You have a basic knowledge of at least one scientific programming/data-analysis language (Python, R, Matlab, etc.).
