Job description

The AIDA research team (https://aida.ugent.be/) is a successful research team within the IDLab research group (http://idlab.technology/). Currently it is home to 10 PhD students, 1 postdoc, and 2 professors. To allow us to build on increasing interest from industry for our research findings, we are looking for a skilled and motivated scientific programmer.

The job will consist of:

- Translating research prototypes of our best research results developed by the AIDA team, into high-quality, scalable, user-friendly, distributable, and maintainable software packages.

- In doing this, contributing to a culture among the team of producing high-quality code.

- To make this possible, take part in the later stages of ongoing research projects.

- All this in a vibrant and interactive academic environment and in direct interaction with several important industrial and governmental players.

- Taking part in training courses to continue to acquire the latest skills relevant in the industry.

The purpose of this position is not to pursue a PhD degree. That said, as a full member of the research team, the successful applicant will of course be recognized as a contributor (co-author of papers, co-inventor of patents, etc) as and when a contribution was made.

While the job is available as a full-time position, applications for part-time employment (at least 60% FTE) will be considered as well. The position is available for a fixed duration of between 2 and 3 years, depending on the fit to the job requirements and whether the employment is part- or full-time.

The position is offered for a fixed limited duration of 2 to 3 years (depending on qualifications), and may be offered part-time (at least 50% FTE).

Profile of the candidate

Required:

- Full stack developer.

- Proven track record in (research) software development, including front-end (web technologies, mobile app development) and back-end (cloud technologies).

- A strong desire to remain on top of the latest developments in the field.

- A keen team player, able to interact productively with a diversity of personalities and nationalities, both internal to the AIDA team and external to it with industrial and governmental collaborators.

- Excellent communication skills in English.

- Strong python experience.

Desired:

- Experience with machine learning / big data stacks and technologies such as Spark, Flink, Tensorflow, pytorch, MXNET,...

- Experience with modern database technologies such as MongoDB, Neo4J, BigTable,...

- Experience with cloud providers such as AWS, GCP, Azure,...

- Experience in a relevant sector of industry (AI/ML development, app development, cloud development,...).

- A rich portfolio of open source software development.

- Willingness to assist in teaching relevant courses (very limited: max 10% of the time).
