  • Environnmental Economics and Management | Department of General Economics
    The research focus is on energy and climate economics; economics of climate policy, the energy transition & energy markets (with a focus on electricity markets). We opt for a multidimensional approach. In our economic analysis of environmental issues, we integrate technological assessments, law & economics, institutional dynamics as well as economics of innovation.

  • Department of Biosystems Engineering
    The department of Biosystems Engineering at the faculty of Bioscience Engineering comprises 3 research units: Bioprocess Engineering, Biosystems Control and Thermochemical Conversion of Biomass. The mission of the Thermochemical Conversion of Biomass research group is the development and optimization of thermochemical conversion technologies of biomass to renewable fuels, chemicals, materials and energy.

  • Building Physics, Construction and Climate Control | Department of Architecture & Urban Planning
    Research is contributing to the development of knowledge about sustainable, durable and energy-efficient buildings with a healthy and comfortable indoor climate. Heat and moisture transfer in buildings and building components is tested, studied and modelled. Furthermore, the performance of buildings and building services is analysed and optimised using simulations and measurements.

  • IDLab (Internet Technology and Data Science Lab) | Department of Information Technology

    IDLab performs fundamental and applied research on internet technology and data science. Major research areas are machine learning and data mining; semantic intelligence; distributed intelligence for IoT; cloud and big data infrastructures; multimedia processing; wireless and fixed networking; electromagnetics, RF and high-speed circuits and systems. Specific energy related research mainly pertains to data analysis and machine learning for smart grids. Also the internet-of-things research in the frame of smart cities is highly relevant in this context.

  • Dynamic Systems and Controls | Department of Electrical Energy, Metals, Mechanical construction & Systems

    Members of this group have research interests in various areas of stability and stabilisation, optimization of dynamical systems, modeling and regulation of Lagrangian and Hamiltonian systems, machine learning, data mining, evolutionary optimization, synchronisation of oscillators, Control of discrete event systems, feedback control for on-line management of networks and Imprecise probabilities as knowledge representations.

  • Maritime Technology Division | Department of Civil Engineering

    The mission of the Maritime Technology Division is to provide an academic education regarding the design, construction, propulsion, functioning and maintaining of marine structures as ships and offshore constructions; to perform fundamental and applied scientific research in the maritime field, especially regarding the hydrodynamics of vessels and other floating constructions; and to carry out scientific studies for and in collaboration with enterprises and public services in the maritime field.

  • Coastal Engineering | Department of Civil Engineering
    The main fields of expertise of the coastal engineering research group are: the design, construction and monitoring of coastal structures (mainly breakwaters and sea dikes), the experimental and numerical modeling of wave propagation and interaction with coastal structures, the development and usage of instruments for field measurements and renewable (wave, tide, offshore wind) energy conversion.
