Wind energy as a renewable energy resource accounted for almost 13% of total primary energy production of renewable energy in EU-28 in 2015.

Wind energy is the renewable energy technology expected to provide the largest contribution to the EU's 2020 renewable energy targets and beyond.

The cost of onshore wind power is already competitive with other sources of electricity in many countries, and the potential of offshore wind power is very high – but the sector needs to bring down costs. The North Sea in particular is well suited to the development of offshore wind energy and will be key in increasing the EU's energy security and decarbonising the economy.
