AFGELAST wegens / CANCELLED caused COVID-19 INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM: Preserving pulp with Tricalciumsilicates

Inleiding / Introduction

Since 2010, BiodentineTM    became available on the Belgian market as an almost pure tricalciumsilicate cement (TCS). The fact that no greyisch dicouloration was seen after using aswell as the the possibiity to keep the product as a temporary filling for a long time was considered by the Dept of Paediatric Dentistry Ghent as great advantage.s in children dentistry. Since then the product was definitely used for pulpotomy in primary molars aswell as for direct and indirect pulpcappings,
and partial and full pulpotomies after traumatic injuries. The use in rootfractures and immature teeth seemed also to be succesfull.
Parallel with a number of clinical applications several research projects were performed on Biodentine TM    and on experimental TCS. This has lead to two doctoral thesisses and several publications.
On the occasion of 10 years use of BiodentineTM   and 10 years of research on TCS the Dept. of Paediatric Dentistry organizes the international symposium:  BiodentineTM

Voordrachten / Presentations

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM : PRESERVING PULP with TRICALCIUMSILICATES10 years of TCS research + future perspectives

Prof dr. Luc MARTENS - Universiteit Gent

Abstract:

Since the introduction of Tricalcium silicates cements (TCS) on the Belgian market ca.10 years ago, the Dept of Paediatric Dentistry Ghent initiated clinical follow-ups and laboratory research especially on BiodentineTM. The first RCT on pulpotomies in primary teeth became published and two PhD projects (doctoral thesisses) became finalised. The main conclusion from all studies was that Biodentine TM was in all aspects an alternative to MTA and in some aspects even superior to MTA. In the mean time a lot of projects were performed aiming to improve the current TCS cements. Besides all indications for pulp treatment, the use of TCS in deep carious lesions became highly recommended. Within this lecture research results and future perspectives for using TCS will be highlighted.

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM : PRESERVING PULP with TRICALCIUMSILICATES10 years follow-up of TCS in traumatic injuries

Prof dr. Rita CAUWELS - Universiteit Gent

Abstract:

Treatment of severe and complicated traumatic injuries, involving the dentin-pulp complex, are a big challenge in preserving the intact tooth structure. During the 90’s new cements arrived on the market and changed the focus of dentin-pulp complex cements from biocompatible to bioactive. Since then, treatment strategies and guidelines are in continues evolution in accordance to the typical characteristics of the bioactive tricalcium silicate cements (TCSc). Last decade, new TCSc arrived  having increased  mechanical properties. More advanced clinical research and experience, referring to the standard mineral trioxide cement, resulted in successful applications in immediate contact with pulp tissue. The preservation and protection of dental pulp with specific emphasis on revitalization is the new treatment strategy in the fields of paediatric dentistry, endodontics and dental traumatology. Biodentine™ as  biocompatible and bioactive cement will be defined and compared to MTA. Applications and long-term follow-up in mature and immature teeth, vital and non-vital traumatized permanent teeth will be illustrated on the basis of clinical cases.

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM : PRESERVING PULP with TRICALCIUMSILICATESRevitalization of necrotic and infected teeth : current insight/guidelines" ?

Prof dr. Stéphane SIMON

Abstract:

By considering the Regenerative procedures from the bench to the chair, it is easier to understand why case selection and clinical protocol car interfere on the final clinical outcome.

The objectives of this lecture are to review the literature on the indication and outcome of Revitalisation, and use the basic science (mainly biology) to make the link with the clinical consideration. From the bench to the chair is the best way to improve our clinical treatment. We will also discussed when and why regenerative procedure could be proposed as an alternative of apexification, and when it should not.

Prof dr. IMAD ABOUT, Aix-Marseille University, Marseille France

Abstract:

Recent data in pulp biology research demonstrated that the dental pulp has a high regeneration capacity through the local regulation of the balance between inflammation and regeneration.

Tricalcium silicate-based materials are now considered as materials of choice for direct pulp capping. While interactions of these bioactive materials with the mineralized tissues provide a hermetic seal preventing bacterial infiltration, their interactions with the soft tissues have anti-inflammatory effects and induce the target tissue regeneration.

This presentation will demonstrate how tricalcium silicates dampen the pulp inflammation and explain how they induce the pulp regeneration potential.

INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM : PRESERVING PULP with TRICALCIUMSILICATESTricalcium silicate based cements and their material properties

Dr. Sivapraksah RAJASEKHARAN, Universiteit Gent

Abstract:

The development and global use of tricalcium silicate based cements has increased substantially in the field of dentistry. Understanding the correlation between material properties and clinical efficacy of commercial tricalcium silicate based biomaterials will be discussed with specific emphasis on the scope and future of this class of materials.  Key topics covered will include manipulation of material characteristics through changes in chemistry, techniques to characterize material properties, interrelationship between different material characteristics and discussing how mechanical and biological properties interact with each other to define the in vivo success of the biomaterial.
