The Role of Nav1.9 in Sensory Perception

Description

Patients with a mutation in Scn11a (Nav1.9) report a dramatic distortion in itch sensation. We seek to understand the link between Nav1.9 and itch by combining genetic and behavioral studies in mice with electrophysiology and biochemistry to reveal how signals triggered by itch sensors travel from the skin to the spinal cord. Successful completion of our goals will offer a starting point to explain the mechanism underlying Nav1.9 mutations that cause pathological itch, a necessary step to design new therapeutics.
