IBD Research Unit

The IBD Research Unit focuses on experimental research related to Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, together also known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). These are chronic relapsing diseases characterized by periods of active inflammation of the digestive tract, usually the small and/or large intestine. IBD may occur at any age but is mainly diagnosed in young adults. The symptoms include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss. To date, the cause of IBD is unknown; however a widely accepted working hypothesis is that the disease results form an overactive immune reaction towards gut micro flora in genetically susceptible hosts.
