Authors, journals and institutions are faced with problems related to improper handling of images in scientific publications. Examples are selective modification and/or duplication of images, which might lead to correction or in severe cases may even warrant retraction of publications. Although many journals have now implemented strict guidelines on what is acceptable, improper laboratory and clinical image processing is still observed with a high frequency, both during the review phase, but unfortunately also after publication.
