The influence of serotonin on gastro-intestinal motility.

A third research area deals with the influence of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) on gastro-intestinal motility.

Serotonin has both contractile as well as relaxant influences on the smooth muscle cells of the gastro-intestinal tract, either directly via receptors on the smooth muscle cells or indirectly via receptors on enteric neurones.

The receptor subtypes involved in the effect of serotonin on stomach and intestine are evaluated in different species. In particular, 5-HT4 receptors are investigated.
