Education in Medicine

The primary focus of the educational program is the generic and core knowledge, skills and attitudes required for a generalist medical professional functioning within the framework of the primary health care system. The department integrates the perspective of person- and people centered care.


The undergraduate bachelor student

  • understands the biological mechanisms of the human body and human behavior.
  • understands the social, psychological, anthropological, cultural and economic determinants of health and illness.
  • knows the ethical and legal basis and the conceptual framework for interprofessional care.
  • is prepared for life-long reflective practices, learning and scholarship, and develops skills to search, retrieve, manage and appraise relevant information.
  • acquires leadership attributes and is able to act as a change agent.


Master after master

During the interuniversitary master-after-master in family medicine, the student is confronted with family medicine in primary care:

  • undifferentiated problems,
  • continuity of care
  • problem-solving-strategy in individuals and the community
  • applying evidence-based medicine, taking into account the health needs of patients and community and addressing the upstream causes of ill-health including social determinants.

Besides the presence of the department within the medical curriculum (bachelor of science programma in medicine and master programme of medicine) of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, the department also provides education in a wide range of other bachelors and masters’ programmes in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.
