GREEN-CHEM Mobility Grant

(09-08-2019) UGent welcomes applications for 2.500 € per visit to exchange research staff (PhD, post-doc or PI) between UGent and other partners of GREEN-CHEM.

GREEN-CHEM aims to annually support the exchange of researchers to foster international collaboration between the GREEN-CHEM partners by sharing access to infrastructure and key technologies, by initiating joint research projects, by setting up joint PhDs or by writing shared scientific publications.

The call opens each year in September and closes January 31. 

Short-term research stay

The GREEN-CHEM grants of max. 2.500 € per visit for a period of several weeks up to a few months are meant to cover (part of the) travel costs, housing and living expenditures, insurance or visa-costs, etc.

Any additional costs that are covered by the host institution in case of outbound visits or by the institution of the visiting scientist in case of incoming visits will be eligible to cover part of the annual co-financing requirements set forward by Ghent University by filling in a co-financing statement after the stay.

The approved grants can be taken up at any time during the year.

How to apply

Your application should be in English. The application form includes the following sections:

  • Personal information
  • A short cover letter, in which you indicate the mobility period, the involved GREEN-CHEM research groups and a motivation about how your current and future research would benefit from the short research stay (including specific outcomes)
  • An estimation of the different costs associated with the research stay, the requested amount of funding to be refunded by the grant.
  • Signature of the GREEN-CHEM promotor and a signature of the collaborating UGent promotor

The application should be submitted by email to in one PDF file. Incomplete or late submissions will not be considered.

One individual can only obtain one grant/year.

Selection criteria and procedures

The following criteria will be taken into account in the selection procedure:

  • The requested amount and level of co-financing
  • The motivation and feasibility of the short research stay
  • The research outcomes and added value for GREEN-CHEM

The GREEN-CHEM network conducts an active policy for diversity and equal opportunities and encourages all the partners to apply. The selection committee will also strive for a balance in sending institutions and in hosting faculties. Priority will also be given to first-time applicants.

The steering committee of GREEN-CHEM with representatives from different faculties will review the applications.


The researcher is expected to submit the following documents to obtain refunding after the research stay:

  • A short 1 page activity report to indicate the output of the research stay at the end of the stay.
  • All the receipts or documents of expenditures for the requested refunds and the amount of co-financing by the partner via a co-financing statement.
  • Within two years after the exchange, provide input for a short story about the GREEN-CHEM innovation you are trying to realize to be published on the website and disseminated via the newsletter. I.e. a one page vulgarizing text about the research project (research objectives, aimed results and importance or practical impact for society.

Practical matters

We will assist awardees with practical arrangements such as visa and application for housing at the university residences. Housing on the private market has to be arranged by the awardee, whereby the Housing Department can assist.
