The archaeology department of Ghent University was committed on behalf of the Nord - Pas-de-Calais administration (France) with the objective of a historical aerial photographs coverage of the entire front region in the French departments of Nord and Pas-de-Calais. For this project approximately 6.500 vertical aerial photographs from the First World War, originating from the photograph archive of the Imperial War Museum (London), were georeferenced in a GIS environment and merged into a mosaic. This mosaic will be used for specially developed web applications and is already at display in a new museum at Souchez, regarding the commemoration of World War I.
