Faculty Research Fund

Through the Faculty Research Fund, faculty staff are entitled to funding to help them with their research.

General conditions

  • Applications must be submitted at least one week before the meeting of the CWO
  • Applications can not be handled retroactively (i.e., the application can not relate to a period started before the meeting of the CWO)
  • Please make sure that your file at flwresearch and in Biblio is always fully up-to-date

ZAP starting grant

Automatic and one-off financial assistance for all new Tenured Academic Staff

The CWO no longer provides ZAP starting grants. All new ZAP members will receive a ZAP starting grant from the Special Research Fund that provides sufficient resources.

AAP starting grant

Automatic and one-off financial assistance for all junior assistants, post-doctoral assistants, the faculty’s predoc and postdoc fellows subsidized by third parties, provided they do not have their own operating funds

Travel grant

Financial assistance for predocs, postdocs and ZAP to allow them to participate in academic conferences abroad, brief research stays abroad or international workshops

  • PREDOC: max. 2 times a year / POSTDOC: max. 2 times a year / ZAP: max. once a year
  • Amount: reimbursement of expenses (travel, lodgings, enrolment fee / no per diems)
  • As a rule, you should first submit a corresponding application to the FWO (Research Foundation Flanders) (first FWO?)
    Only PhD students who do not yet meet the FWO publication requirements can receive a travel grant on the Faculty Research Fund (max. 2 times) without first submitting an application to the FWO
  • Doctoral students who wish to use this grant for attending a workshop should request the registration fee part via the Doctoral School

The resources of the CWO are limited. Try to limit your travel and accommodation costs. Staff members who are employed on larger projects (genre ERC, Methusalem, Odysseus, ...) are expected to be able to finance their research trips with the financial resources of the project.

Extended stay

Financial assistance for predocs, postdocs and ZAP for longer stays in a foreign research institution (min. 3 weeks)

  • PREDOC: once / POSTDOC: once / ZAP: once every five years
  • Amount: travel cost / accommodation max. EUR 1,000 per month, max. EUR 6,000 / family allowance, if applicable
  • As a rule, you should first submit a corresponding application to the FWO (Research Foundation Flanders) (first FWO?)

Intersectoral stay

Financial assistance for predocs, postdocs and ZAP for a longer stay in another, private or public institution outside academia (min. 3 weeks)

  • PREDOC: once / POSTDOC: once / ZAP: once every five years
  • Amount: travel cost / accommodation max. EUR 1,000 per month, max. EUR 6,000 / family allowance, if applicable
  • As a rule, for a stay abroad, you should first submit a corresponding application to the FWO (Research Foundation Flanders) (first FWO?)

Incoming stay

Financial assistance for foreign researchers with a minimum of two years’ postdoctoral experience for an academic stay at the faculty (min. 1 month, max. 3 months), on the nomination of a member of the faculty

Sabbatical

Substitution for Tenured Academic Staff members who are looking for a sabbatical leave (ideally 6 months, min. 3 months, max. 12 months)

  • Extent: substitution by a guest professor, limited to an appointment of maximum 50%
  • Submission dates: applications will be dealt with at the CWO meeting in May (c.q. June) or November (c.q. December)
  • As a rule, you should first submit a corresponding application to the FWO (Research Foundation Flanders)

Organisational grant

Financial assistance for the organisation of an academic conference or a meeting of an academic society, at the request of a member of the faculty

Grant upon request

Financial assistance for fully reasoned requests for other research support

  • Amount: depending on the request
  • Applications are assessed in an ad-hoc manner depending on (1) the appropriateness of the application and (2) the resources available
