What is the MA in East European Languages and Cultures?

The programme of East European Languages and Cultures focuses both on Russia and Southeast Europe, more specifically the Slavic cultures on the Balkans. The Master of Arts in East European Languages and Cultures is an academic programme that primarily focuses on a more specialized and more profound study of East European culture in all its aspects – linguistics, literature, philology, area studies and (cultural) history.

What does the course look like?

The programme is a combination of a language and a culture study. You can either focus on two (or more) Slavic languages (Russian, Bulgarian, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, and also Slovene) or on one Slavic language (Russian, Bulgarian, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian). In both cases you choose a few other topics – linguistics, literature, philology, area studies and (cultural) history – that are related to the topic of your master’s thesis.

Why study East European Languages and Cultures at Ghent University?

The programme is a combination of a language and a culture study. It covers two major areas: Russia and South East Europe. Moreover, the programme approaches the area from a multidisciplinary and historical point of view.  There are plenty of possibilities for studying abroad.

What are the central research themes in line with the course?

In terms of research, the department mainly focuses on (1) Balkan Studies, (2) Ethnolinguistics and folklore, (3) Palaeoslavica: Medieval and Premodern Slavic Language and Text Studies, and (4) Studies in Modern Russian and South Slavic Literature.
