Three-day international conference organized by Ghent University and the Historians of Netherlandish Art. From Thursday 24 May to Saturday 26 May 2018

The three-day conference of the Historians of Netherlandish art will take place at Het Pand in Ghent and in Bruges on several locations.

The organizing committee would like to stress the ambition of the event, i.e. to stimulate clear new takes on art history in the 21st century. Indeed, since the days of Wölfflin and Panofsky, the formal and iconological approaches to art have been supplemented with insights and methodologies from nearly all academic disciplines, leading to a whole series of ‘turns’ (semiotic, visual, spatial, material, ...), a globalization of Netherlandish art and to some extent a Babylonian confusion of speech. This conference aims at clarifying the paths to follow in the study of Netherlandish art, and to remold old and new ideas. Where do the sources meet the theory? What does the concept add to the fact? What is the impact of technical art history on iconology? Further more, we would like to stimulate interdisciplinary and especially multi-media approaches.
