WOG on Spectacle Culture

The Research Foundation Flanders (FWO) approved the scientific research community (WOG) on "Spectacle Culture" in December 2015. The community is active since 1 January 2016. The Institute for Media Studies (KU Leuven; Roel van de Winkel and Leen Engelen) is the main group, and Christel Stalpaert and S:PAM are involved as a centre for expertise and a research unit.

On 19 January 2016, the Institute for Media Studies organised an introductory meeting in the Justus Lipsiusroom in the Erasmusbuilding (Blijde-Inkomststraat 21, 3000 Leuven), from 9.30h until 17h. In the forenoon, the nine research units (S:PAM included) that are part of the community will hold short presentations. Christel Stalpaert and Evelien Jonckheere will present the most research tracks within S:PAM that are most relevant for the theme of "spectacle culture." In the afternoon, expertise centres Het Firmament and LECA will offer a short and exploratory overview about the role and diversity of research on "spectacle culture" in the field of heritage. Then, Prof. Julia Noordegraag (UvA), international partner of the WOG, will talk about the objectives of CREATE  and the potential interfaces with the research community.
