Working group Dramaturgy

Founded in Amsterdam in 2008 by Katharina Pewny (Ghent University), Peter M. Boenisch (University of Kent, Canterbury) and Evelyn Deutsch-Schreiner (Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst, Graz).

Context

Dramaturgy is a concept that traditionally encompasses a lot of different dimensions of theatre: development dramaturgy, performance dramaturgy, production dramaturgy, dramaturgy as the positioning of a theatre in its city/region and dramaturgy as the constructive principle of ideological and social processes.

The research group dramaturgy approaches the concept 'Dramaturgy' even broader, in the sense of Eugenio Barba, as a relational process intrinsic to every performance, that connects elements of the stage texture, and interacts with and acts on the spectator directly (Barba/Savarese 1991: 69ff). Dramaturgy in that sense becomes a mediation process between:

  • Rehearsal and performance
  • Text and performance
  • Word, body, and space
  • Stage and audience
  • Composition and reflection
  • Mediality and materiality
  • Institution and society
  • Aesthetics and politics
  • Art and science
  • Past, present and future

In this research, the central question is what can be the perspectives of a relational scientific research that is at the same time relevant for the practical field, and where this academic and practical-political relevance of a theatre scientific dramaturgy may lie?
These aspects are being treated by the research group, using exchange and discussion between theatre scholars and artists, as well as research and reflection on theoretical and historical caesuras of dramaturgy. For that, the research group focuses not only on theatre dramaturgy, but also on the dramaturgy of dance, performance and postdramatic theatre forms.

As dramaturgy is a 'bastard' between arts, science and society, the research group is open for new members; both theatre scholars as well as dramaturges and other people of the practical field.
