Content information

Starting level:

  • You want to study Dutch and already have knowledge or you have followed the level 1 course of Dutch for speakers of other languages.
    • You are able to have a short and simple conversation in Dutch. For example, you can explain how to get somewhere, you can introduce yourself and you can ask for information.
    • When somebody speaks slowly and clearly to you, you can understand him or her.
  • You most of all need practical knowledge of the Dutch language in daily life.

Objective: see "Content"

Content:

  • Speaking skills: interaction is a major objective of this course. All grammatical structures and communicative skills (for example going to the doctor, opening a bank account, and booking a hotel room) are practised so that you can fluently use them in daily life. Different forms of speaking exercises such as class conversations, discussions in small groups and pair works are all used in class.
  • Listening skills: semi-authentic listening materials are often used in class: by means of specific listening assignments you learn how to cope with simple spoken messages.
  • Reading skills: you get acquainted with short texts and learn how to get relevant information out of them.
  • Specific grammatical items: you extend your basic knowledge of the Dutch grammar. The formation of complex sentences is dealt with (subordinate clauses with 'omdat', 'terwijl', indirect speech) as well as the relative clause and different past tenses (perfectum/VTT and imperfectum/OVT).
  • Topics: you are introduced, among other topics, to Belgium and Flanders (cities, sights, the organisation of the federal state of Belgium).
