Content information

Starting level: You master Italian quite well, especially grammar, but you have not had many chances to put your knowledge into practice. You sometimes feel insecure when you speak. You often use the same verbs and expressions and you doubt whether what you say is correct. Your speaking rhythm can improve.
This course builds on the UCT course Practical Italian Level 3. You master the following tenses: presente, futuro semplice, condizionale semplice, l’imperativo (tutte le forme), il condizionale composto, il passato prossimo, l’imperfetto, il congiuntivo presente, la forma passiva. Equally, you master the following grammar elements: i pronomi personali, possessivi, diretti, indiretti, combinati; i gradi di comparazione and i pronomi relativi, gli avverbi.

You take a placement test in the first session.

  • Oral skills: The course focuses on speaking in Italian: you will learn to function in everyday situations. Using conversation and discussion exercises, you will review known grammar structures and expand your vocabulary. You will fine-tune your pronunciation and intonation.
  • Listening skills: The number of listening exercises is limited. However, we will listen to a number of songs as an introduction to each chapter. Among these will be popular classics as well as lesser known songs from the sixties and seventies.
  • Reading skills: You deepen your vocabulary and grammar base by reading mostly authentic texts of average difficulty. The texts serve as an introduction to small-scale debates, conversations and group talks.
  • Writing skills: Practical writing exercises (letters, emails, short texts, ...) allow you to practise grammar and vocabulary as realistically as possible.
  • Vocabulary: Each class covers a vocabulary theme. Special attention is paid to idiomatic expressions. The entire course centres on communication. Next to everyday Italian and tourist situations, you will also cover (basic) business Italian and polite forms. The main four themes in this course are: Evviva l’Italia, La vita familiare, Tanti auguri ! en Il mondo del lavoro.
