Why people bring each other down on social media

"People like to read positive news, but they also engage in social comparison. You have upward and downward social comparison. Upward social comparison is comparing yourself to someone who outperforms you, which motivates you to perform better. In downward social comparison, you compare yourself with someone who is doing less well than yourself and that strengthens your ego. That's why we do that a lot." says Prof. Koen Ponnet
