15 YEARS MICT - We are celebrating our 15th anniversary!

(28-11-2019) Where initially the focus was on media & ICT, today we study the relationships between technology, people and society. We do this by looking at 'shifting interfaces' (from analogue to digital) and by studying their interactions, impact and insights.

On December 19 we celebrate our birthday with an evening program full of scientific insights on how people interact with technology today and how we contribute to future technologies for the people of tomorrow!

Within mict we developed an app to monitor smartphone use. MobileDNA provides its users with three tools to monitor their smartphone use. In this demo, we'll give an overview of how the application works and how users can interact with their data. Additionally, we will present an interactive dashboard with some key statistics on smartphone use, logged by the mobileDNA application.


OPSORO stands for Open Platform For Social Robotics and is more than just a robot. OPSORO democratizes social robot technologies and is meant for everyone. Not only techies, makers or developers, really everyone! Age or gender doesn’t matter.


Creative therapy strives to eliminate boredom by providing fun and motivating exergames. Matti is an interactive tool for rehabilitation therapy which combines traditional therapy-gear with an interactive online Platform.

IoT Chef

The IoTChef project leverages upon IoT technology to create a connected cooking system that enhances the cooking and eating experience. The IoT chef demo shows the setup for Wizard of Oz testing, a methodology we often use to let potential users evaluate a technology before it has actually been developed. This allows for disruptive changes before large investments have been made for development.

Smart Switches

Within the MUSIC project we developed gesture controls in cooperation with NIKO, Belgians largest switch manufacturer. The user can invent and learn the gestures with one button, and create its own gestures for personalized control. This can be e.g. a handshake in the morning to switch on all the lights in the living area; one twist to switch everything off…The technology is based on a rotation encoder. Data is clustered and processed by means of Hidden Markov-Models.

Hello Jenny

Hello Jenny is an experimental solution to fight social isolation among senior citizens. The demo showcases the current prototype of a sensor-connected voice interface which is combined with a Facebook Messenger application and monitoring dashboard.

Cognitive Load

In the LoRem 4.0 project, we explored the validity of psycho-physiological cognitive load measures (based on analysis of EEG, EOG, GSR and facial expressions) in industrial assembly contexts and how such measures can help in remediating cognitive load. The demo shows how EEG research is performed in a lab setting.

Fitting room of the future

In a partnership with Van de Velde and In the Pocket, we evaluated an augmented reality application that endorses the intimate lingerie shopping experience.


LBLOD is a standardization program from the Flemish Government that opens up Local Council Decisions as Linked Open Data. The Demo showcases how civil servants in their work processes and interactions with software efficiently can write complex legislative texts with the help from 'Semantics@YourFingertips'.


Within the NewsDNA project we develop a news recommendation system that uses news diversity as a key driver to personalize news content. This demo showcases the current prototype of the news recommendation system.


The objective of ProMoW was to remove the hurdles for creating smart products by focusing on user and usage (market & context), interaction (context & technology) and product design (technology & production). The project delivered User Centered, Interaction and Product Design guidelines and provided a Technology Selector that helps companies in making the right decisions in terms of hard- and software. Moreover, engineering students from the Ghent University Campus Kortrijk created demonstrators in collaboration with Flemish companies. In total more than 20 demonstrators were developed during the life time of the project. Check out all the demos from the Promow project here.


In the Patronus project, we sought to develop a dashboard that provides personalized, blended, emotion-aware support to therapists and patients throughout the entire anxiety therapy process, both during in vivo and virtual reality exposure.

VR - Audience Effect

People tend to behave differently in the presence of others. This so called 'audience effect' has consequences for task performance and learning. What if the audience isn't really there? What if the audience is clearly computer-generated? In this simple VR experiment, we address those questions using a custom-made reaction time task.


In the SenseCity project, we focus on different aspects of the workflow of human control room operators. In this demo, a reaction time experiment on the effect reliability of AI-assistance has on the human operator is demonstrated.
