Participative journalism - Professionals’ attitudes towards participatory journalism in Europe and the US

This project, financed by the Helsingin Sanomat Foundation, investigates the attitudes of media professionals in Europe and the USA regarding user-generated content and participative journalism. The study is an extension of a Finnish research project into civilian journalism that was carried out by Ari Heinonen of the University of Tampere. The study also builds on a content-analysis of 16 online newspapers in the selected countries, which showed that most websites are still somewhat restrained in encouraging active user participation.
The research project will collect internationally comparable data regarding the professional and organisational factors that influence the adoption of participative journalism in news editing. The researchers will provide a better insight into the development and problems of participative journalism on the basis of in-depth interviews with media professionals from Belgium, Germany, Finland, Israel, Croatia, Spain, the UK and the USA.
