Lies De Kimpe is a junior researcher at the research group MIOS (University of Antwerp) and the research group for Media, Innovation and Communication Technologies (Ghent University). She holds a Bachelor Degree in Communication Sciences (Ghent University, 2015) and graduated as a Master in Communication Sciences with a specialization in Journalism (Ghent University, 2016). Her master’s thesis focused on the use of hyperlinks, multimedia and interactivity in online news.

In October 2016, she started working as a PhD student at MIOS (University of Antwerp), under the supervision of Prof. dr. Michel Walrave and Prof. dr. Koen Ponnet. In August 2018, Lies also joined the research group imec-mict-UGent, as her PhD became a joint PhD between University of Antwerp and Ghent University. Her current research focuses on cybercrime victims and their coping strategies.

She is involved in the Social Capital and Neighborhoods (SCAN) project, which is a collaboration with the department of Criminology, Criminal Law and Social Law (Ghent University). As part of this project, citizens of Ghent are questioned every year through a large-scale survey about their neighborhood, social capital, risk behaviors and experiences as a victim of online and offline crime.
