Marijn Martens is a postdoctoral researcher at the imec research group for Media, Innovation and Communication Technologies (imec-mict-UGent). He obtained a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education: Physics – Mathematics (Artevelde University College, 2015), a master’s degree in CommunicationSciences with a specialization in New Media and Society (Ghent University, 2017), and a doctoral degree in Communication Sciences (Ghent University, 2023).

He joined imec-mict-UGent in 2017 on the interdisciplinary BCC-project (Belgian Cost of Cybercrime). In October 2018, Marijn started his FWO-funded PhD track (2018- 2023) concerning the evaluations of algorithmic decision-making systems from the perspective of laypeople. Marijn employed a critical & interpretative mixed method research design in his dissertation. The project enveloped six empirical studies covering a multitude of contexts (i.e., education, health, news…).

Currently, Marijn is working on the SBO project: Disconnect to Reconnect with the objective to improve people’s relationship with digital technologies across work, school, and family contexts. The SBO project is a collaborative project between Ghent University, KU Leuven and the University of Antwerp.
