Accurate layer thickness control and narrow tolerance uniformity (better than 1 nm) of PVD coated thin films across large sized substrates (larger than 1 m2) have become essential to cope with the needs of advanced layer stacks in a variety of photonics applications. In a short introduction, it will be shown how state-of-the-art magnetron sputter sources are able tuning and controlling thin film layer properties on large sized transparent substrates. The main part of the talk will be dedicated to pointing out and scientifically detailing some of the major photonic applications surrounding us today and which only became possible because of the presented thin film coating technology.  We will be covering energy conservation (low-E architectural glass) and harvesting (solar energy), mobility (automotive coatings and portable electronics) and other fields that heavily rely on thin film optical coatings and that became indispensable in our modern daily life.


Speaker bio-sketch:

Wilmert De Bosscher holds a PhD in Solid State Physics and Plasma Physics and has been active in the vacuum coating industry for more than 30 years.  He has been instrumental in the development and introduction of rotatable magnetron technology into the industry. Since 2012, Wilmert is CTO of Soleras Advanced Coatings, a leading global provider of advanced materials and sputter solutions in a wide variety of applications.
