Prof. Sophie Janssens will explain her work on endoplasmic reticulm (ER) stress in dendritic cells and more specifically on the ER stress sensor IRE1.

Prof. Sophie Janssens' group is part of the VIB Center for Inflammation Research and Internal Medicine, Ghent University.

IRE1 is the most conserved signalling branch of the unfolded protein response (UPR). It is typically activated in conditions of ER stress, like massive accumulation of unfolded proteins, which induces an adaptive response to restore ER homeostasis. This implies that in most cell types the pathways is not active in steady state.
We found that in one subset of dendritic cells, the pathways is constitutively activated, without any signs of an overt UPR response.
Therefore, we postulated that the IRE1 branch might have adopted a different function in dendritic cells and are currently trying to understand its main function.
