Roundtable event about the arrest and conviction of Russian opposition leader Aleksei Navalny and the debate about the political future of Russia.
Navalny’s cunning use of social media and the wave of protests that has emerged in the wake of his arrest have raised questions about the sustainability of Putin’s reign.
This roundtable event will critically address these questions by offering insights into the movement around Navalny and assessing to what extent the recent protests are a reflection of wider societal discontent rather than direct support for Navalny.
Also the implications for Russia’s political future will be discussed, along with the role of traditional and digital media. As Russia’s relations with the European Union have further deterioritated over the poisining and arrest of Navalny, the discussion will also focus on the question what the EU should do.
