Prof. Frits Koning (Department of Immunology, Leiden University Medical Center) will discuss how the fetal intestinal immune system develops.

Previously we have provided evidence for the generation of memory-like CD4+ T cells in the human fetal intestine, consistent with in utero exposure to foreign antigens. More recently, we have applied spectral flow cytometry and imaging mass cytometry to analyze the development of the fetal intestinal immune system in the second trimester. We detected formation of lymphoid follicles (LFs) as early as week 16 of gestation containing ILCs, T cells, B cells and CD163+ and CD163- myeloid cells in a villus like structure covered by epithelium.

Our results point to early formation of highly organized lymphoid structures in the developing fetal intestine and suggest that the fetal intestinal immune compartment fills up from inside through expansion of immune subset-committed progenitor cells.
