Korte beschrijving

This doctoral dissertation is concerned with ratifying, reviewing and, to the extent necessary, revamping the principle of non-intervention under public international law. Whereas the international legal baseline on non-intervention is first set out in the introduction, its impact (or lack thereof) is tested in four topical case studies discussing the legality of alleged Russian attempts to sway the 2016 US presidential election; third-state assistance to Syrian and Ukrainian rebel armed forces; inter-state arms transfers during the Yemeni civil war; and the Saudi-led (direct military) intervention in Yemen – supplemented by an analysis of state and individual responsibility for facilitating the warwaging and crime-committing capacity of military aid recipients. Building on the research findings, the conclusion offers a fresh account of the principle’s substance and function in international law – and its relation to state sovereignty, the right to self-determination and the prohibition on the use of force.
