- Nicolás Romero Rata was born on August 17th 1993, in Madrid, Spain. In 2015, he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Biology at the Complutense University of Madrid (Universidad Complutense de Madrid, UCM) in Madrid, Spain. In 2017, he graduated as a Master in Virology at the same university. From April 2015 to July 2017, he was also a trainee at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Biology of the Spanish National Centre for Biotechnology (CNB-CSIC; Spanish National Research Council) in Madrid. There, he studied the molecular determinants of birnavirus pathogenesis under the guidance of Dr. José Francisco Rodríguez Aguirre, with a particular focus on the type I interferon pathway. In September 2017, he joined the research team of Prof. Dr. Herman Favoreel at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at Ghent University (Universiteit Gent) to perform a Ph.D. on the interaction of the pseudorabies virus (PRV) with the NF-κB signaling pathway. In December 2018, he was granted a strategic basic PhD fellowship of the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO-SB) to support his research. During his Ph.D. research, Nicolás has collaborated with international researchers Dr. Shigeki Miyamoto and Dr. Shelly M. Davis-Wuerzberger at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, WI, USA and published several research articles in international peer-reviewed journals in virology, particularly the Journal of Virology. In addition, he has presented his work at the annual congress of the Belgian Society for Virology (BELVIR) in 2019 and 2021.

Korte beschrijving
Evasion of innate immune responses at epithelial surfaces is crucial for viruses that initiate the infection of their hosts at diverse mucosae, as happens for most of the alphaherpesviruses, including pseudorabies virus (PRV). The modulation of these early antiviral responses may be decisive for the fate of virus colonization of the individual. The innate immune response critically relies on signaling networks that sense the presence of the virus and transduce this detection into powerful (often pro-inflammatory) warning signals to the immune system. Among these, the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling axis plays a pivotal role. In the present doctoral dissertation, we carefully evaluated the interaction of PRV with the NF-κB pathway and addressed its outcome in porcine epithelial cells.
