The talk is part of the online seminar on 'Women in Balkan literature and culture: subversive readings and identity challenges'.
During the ideological Thaw, the Romanian fiction regains its interest in autonomous values by emphasising a-historical, ambiguous and ‘aesthetical’ forms, all meant to counterbalance the still-functional ideological constraint.
In this literary space, the historical novel, a traditionally prestigious and canonizing literary form, remains a rare and insolite genre: the historical themes are dangerously close to the political agenda of the censorship, and the realist frame seems too related to the ideological dogma of the recently abandoned realist socialism.
