An entry level course on data analysis, data visualisation and scripting for PhD students who are new to R.

Data science us key in modern biological and biomedical research. It has become paramount for experimental researchers to acquire basic data analysis skills to

  • become autonomous in basic data analysis and visualisation
  • leverage these basic data science skills as a stepping stone to acquire mode advanced skills such as omics data analysis
  • facilitate communication with expert bioinformaticians.

This course will address these points using the R language, the RStudio environment and focusing on tidy biomedical data analysis.

After the workshop, the learners will be able to:

  • Use RStudio to write R scripts and manage data analysis projects.
  • Understand and apply to principles of tidy data to own data.
  • Use R’s basic data types
  • Import and export tabular data in/out of R.
  • Manipulate and analyze tabular data using tidyverse.
  • Visualize data using the ggplot2 package
  • Know about the Bioconductor project & SummarizedExperiment data structures
