Functieomschrijving

The Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University offers a full-time (100%) vacancy for a PhD scholar in the area of Adverse Outcome Pathways within Environmental and Human Health Risk assessment

Within the EU PARC partnership on the Risk Assessment of Chemicals (https://www.ugent.be/en/research/research-ugent/eu-trackrecord/heu/heu-collaborative/parc.htm)

The European Partnership for the Assessment of the Risks from Chemicals is seeking to develop next-generation chemical risk assessment, incorporating both human health and the environment in a “One Health” approach. It will help support the European Union’s Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability and the European Grean Deal’s “zero pollution” ambition. Bringing together nearly 200 scientific partners from 28 countries as well as EU agencies, PARC is coordinated by ANSES, with funding on an equal basis from Horizon Europe, the 9th EU research and innovation framework programme, and the partnership’s participants.

The UGent contribution of Prof. Jana Asselman (Blue Growth Research Lab: https://bluegrowthlab.ugent.be/) to PARC focusses on adverse outcome pathways that describe the activity of a chemical from its initial interaction with a biological system (the molecular initiating event) through a series of intermediate events to the eventual toxic response. These adverse outcome pathways will be used as novel tools within systems toxicology and novel approach methodologies as part of integrated approaches for testing and assessment. It will focus on the data mining of both internal and publicly available molecular toxicity data, including high throughput omics data for systems toxicology and AOP development and approaches.

Within the project, you will:

  • function within an international team of researchers and build a professional network
  • perform research activities with the aim of writing a PhD thesis in English
  • publish your research in scientific journals and present your results at the national and international level

The Ghent University is a family friendly organization, with a focus on equal opportunities and diversity. The HR-policy for researchers of UGent has been awarded the quality label 'HR Excellence in Research' by the European Commission.
