PhD position on Forensic Proteomics using Mass spectrometry

Place: Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology
Promotors: Prof. Dieter Deforce and Dr. Laura De Clerck
Position: PhD student (4years)
Start: flexible between 1/10/2022 and 1/01/2023

In forensic science, DNA reigns supreme when it comes to identification of individuals. However, there are a number of circumstances where DNA is unable to provide the requested information. In this project, state of the art mass spectrometry- and machine learning analysis will be applied to detect forensic protein biomarkers for e.g. the identification of biological matrices, phenotypic characteristics and the time since deposition. For instance, proving that the DNA of a rape-victim found under the fingernails of the suspect originates from vaginal fluid confirms that sexual interaction took place.

  • You will be responsible for the collection, preparation and analysis of the human samples (biological fluids, (organ) tissues, …).
  • You will optimize samples preparation protocols, MS acquisition strategies and data-analysis
  • You will closely collaborate with other researchers from in- and outside our laboratory.
  • You will report study results in writing and orally in the national and international scientific community.
  • You will have the unique opportunity to participate in international research projects and to cooperate with forensic laboratories on real forensic cases.
  • You will carry out a limited number of teaching tasks.

Suitable candidates have a Master degree in Forensic science, Biotechnology, Bioscience engineering, Pharmaceutical science or a related field. Previous experience in mass spectrometry is a plus, but not required.

Other profile requirements:

  • You can demonstrate good study results (top 15%).
  • You are an independent, driven, motivated, critical person with an interest in forensic science and LC-MS/MS analysis.
  • You like to be active at all levels of research: lab work (sample preparation and analysis), data analysis, and writing manuscripts.
  • Your English is fluent, both in speaking and writing.
  • You act with attention to quality, integrity, creativity and cooperation

Applications should include a CV, motivation letter, and grade transcripts. All documents should be sent electronically to: Please mention “PhD Position Forensic proteomics” in the subject line.
