Final lunch lecture of the MSS series 2018-2019, with archaeologist dr. Dirk Rieger (Lübeck)

The Gründungsviertel – Lübeck’s merchants’ quarter.

The research unit Historical Archaeology, the Pirenne Institute and the doctoral school Specialist Course on Economic Archaeology are happy to invite everyone to the lecture of Dr. Dirk Rieger. This will take place on Wednesday 5th of June, 2019 at 14:00 in the Pirenne Room (Ghent, UFo building, 1st floor).

Dr. Dirk Rieger is city archaeologist in the historical  Hansa town of Lübeck. He is involved in large scale excavations (ca. 1ha.) of the medieval merchant quarter (the so-called Gründungsviertel).

In his lecture he will provide an overview of the most important results of the internationally acclaimed research on the well preserved medieval merchants' quarter of Lübeck. Dr Rieger will focus on the development of the city of Lübeck since the 12th century, the crafts (e.g. leather processing, amber industry), (merchant) housing and the shops and artisan ateliers (wooden basements and houses, natural stone and brick constructions). He will shed light on these findings in the wider context of Lübeck's widespread trade relationships, a.o. with Bruges and the surrounding towns of its harbour system.

Please note that this lecture will be in the Pirenne Room of the UFo building and that it will start a bit later than usual, i.e. 14h00.
