ReadHY: Development of an innovative testing method towards a better understanding of hydrogen-metal interactions to secure gaseous hydrogen transportation

Context 

The growing interest in hydrogen as a energy carrier raises important challenges for its transport through existing pipeline networks. Exposure to hydrogen can degrade pipeline steel through a phenomenon called hydrogen embrittlement, where hydrogen interacts with the material microstructure and defects, compromising its mechanical properties. Most studies on this phenomenon have been performed at a laboratory scale and do not fully represent actual pipeline conditions. Therefore, there is a need to design new testing methods that better replicate operating conditions and provide reliable data for assessing pipeline safety in hydrogen service. 

Research objectives 

The aim of the ReadHY project is to develop a “Dynamic Tube Rupture Test (DTRT)”, in order to deliver empirical knowledge of industrial pipelines longevity while exposed to pressurized hydrogen gas.  

To achieve this objective, the ReadHY project is structured into seven work packages (WPs). SMS group is responsible for one of these work packages, dedicated to conducting preliminary trials using conventional techniques to assess the most critical defect (notch) locations in welded materials.
