Research afternoons


The goal of the faculty research afternoons is to provide an opportunity for researchers from different departments and research teams to meet. Therefore, each time, two departments present the key points of their research activities in an accessible way. In addition, new PhD students have the opportunity to present their future research activities during a poster session. The research afternoon closes with an informal reception. During the reception, the winner of the ‘Best Poster Award’ will be announced. The Winners of previous editions can be found here. the The research afternoon is organised by the scientific research committee (SRC).


Each academic year two research afternoons are organised. For the academic year 2017-2018 the research afternoons are on the following dates:

  • December 20th, 2017
  • May 23rd, 2018

The presentations will take place in Auditorium 2, the poster session and reception will take place in the adjacent hall.

Poster session

How to register?

  • Registrations will be accepted until two weeks before the research afternoon. For each session the registrations are on a first come first served base until the maximal number of allowed registrations (40) is reached. Check this link to make sure there are still places.
  • Doctoral students should submit a request to present personally by means of a signed letter delivered at the Dean’s office (not by e-mail). To be eligible, the following conditions must be met:
    • The doctoral student must have received prior approval from his/her doctoral advisory committee to present on the research afternoon.
    • The supervisor should have submitted the doctoral advisory committee report in which it is stated that permission has been granted, to the Dean’s office.
    • The doctoral student should be officially enrolled as a doctoral student for the current academic year.
    • The admission should clearly state the exact research afternoon on which the doctoral student wants to present as well as the date on which he or she received approval to present from the doctoral advisory committee.


  • Format: A0 vertical ('portrait')
  • Language: Preferably English
  • The layout of the poster should be in the UGent corporate design.
  • The doctoral student is responsible for printing the poster.
  • The poster should minimally contain the following elements:
    • Name of the doctoral student, the promotor and the members of the doctoral advisory committee.
    • Background and context of the research project (Why is this research conducted? What is the scientific contribution?)
    • The research question and problem statement (What exactly will be studied?)
    • Methodology (How will the research question be addressed?)
    • Planning of the different research phases (if applicable, e.g. for longitudinal studies).
  • Some space (2 cm) should be left blank at the top and the bottom of the poster because it will be covered by the mounting system.
  • The poster should be sent as a pdf to and this at least 1 week before the research afternoon.
  • The filename should be constructed as follows: poster_lastname_firstname.pdf
  • Posters can be placed between 12:30 and 13:30.
