Within research group CEPEC (Centre for Persuasive Communication) of the department Communication Sciences of Ghent University following full-time position (m/f/x) is vacant: A PhD scholarship (4 years) within a BOF-project entitled “How Preschool Children can Resist YouTube Video Advertising: An Empirical Approach to Uncover the challenges YouTube Advertising Pose for Preschool Children.”


This research project examines how preschool children (aged three to five) are affected by video advertising on YouTube. More specifically, the current project will investigate how advertising literate (their knowledge and skills) preschool children are for these new advertising formats based on experimental research and in-depth interviews. Moreover, the project will examine how advertising disclosures can help them recognize this advertising and how parents can help their preschool children to enhance their advertising literacy.

Your tasks

You will be involved in this project as a researcher. This means that you are responsible for the development and implementation of the concrete research packages (including conducting experimental research and in-depth interviews). You are also expected to give presentations at (inter-)national conferences and prepare scientific publications based on your research. In addition, you are expected to write a doctoral dissertation based on the conducted research. Finally, you will participate in the daily operation of the research group (CEPEC) and the department of Communication Sciences.

What we are looking for

- You hold a degree of Master in Social Sciences, most preferably in Communication Sciences, Psychology or Business Economics. Other diplomas are eligible if you have sufficient relevant research experience and knowledge of the research domain. Final year students can also apply.

- You have a strong interest in scientific theory formation (more specifically in persuasive communication, with a focus on advertising literacy).

- You have a passion for scientific research.

- You can set up and conduct empirical research independently and in a team.

- You have knowledge of and/or experience with experimental and/or qualitative research methods.

- You have affinity with the target group of the study (preschool children).

- You show a great deal of creativity, independence and a sense of initiative.

- You have a thorough knowledge of Dutch and English (spoken and written language skills).

- Knowledge of SPSS and graphic software is recommended.
