Mario Slugan’s Montage as Perceptual Experience: Berlin Alexanderplatz from Döblin to Fassbinder (Boydell & Brewer, 2017) is the first monograph-length work to treat Döblin’s novel and its two film adaptations on the same pages. By arguing that to understand both literary and film montage we need to analyze the audience’s reactions to the works as much as the works’ formal properties, the book offers an intermedial theory of montage in historical, perceptual, stylistic, and narratological terms.
