Embracing sociocultural diversity? A study into identity politics, identity-based programming, and promotional practices at European International Film Festivals
The first IFFs (international film festivals) took place in Europe in the first half of the 20th century and were considered a platform to promote national cinema culture. Subsequently, IFFs evolved into large-scale institutions that to this day play a central role in the exhibition, distribution, and production of films. Unfortunately, there was little or no attention to showcasing films that addressed socio-cultural diversity, leading to the emergence and organization of identity-based film festivals. For IFFs, identity politics was not a decisive or promotional factor in programming choices. However, the years 2017 and 2018 were a turning point for the film industry. It can no longer ignore the underrepresentation of women and socio-cultural minorities. Some IFFs do take their role in promoting dialogue and representation of a diverse society (e.g., identity-based programs and awards). This project examines how leading European IFFs integrate socio-cultural diversity into their programming and promotional practices. The goal of this project is twofold. First, it investigates how socio-cultural diversity is represented at European IFFs. Second, it examines how IFFs deal with identity politics: how do film festival actors understand their role and what practices are used in relation to identity politics?
