Lies Van de Vijver received a Master in Arts History from Ghent University in 2003 and a Master in Film Studies and Visual Culture from the University of Antwerp in 2004. She has been a researcher at CIMS from 2005 working on the research project ‘The Enlightened City’-project (FWO, 2005-2008) and the follow-up project ‘Gent Kinemastad’ (BOF, 2009-2011) on the historical cinema culture in Ghent, and the postdoctoral research project ‘Cinema Located’ (FWO, 2011-2014) on contemporary cinema audiences. On the 2nd of December 2011, she successfully defended her doctoral thesis on the history of screen culture, film programming and cinema experience in Ghent. She was a visiting professor Film Historiography (Antwerp University), coordinator of the HoMER Network (History of Moviegoing, Exhibition and Reception), and the DICIS Network (Digital Cinema Studies). She frequently co-organizes conferences on media history research and she published in several international journals and readers on the history of screen culture in Ghent and Flanders. In 2015, she organized the exhibition FILMTHEATERS on the history of cinema in Ghent in Caermersklooster. In 2018 she has been granted an Arts & Humanities Standard Research Grant (AHRC, 2018-2021) on comparative research on European cinema audiences. She is currently working on a book on history of cinema culture in Ghent.
