On March 22, 2023, Jingwen Qi successfully defended her PhD titled “Land of the rising sun or yellow threat? A mixed-method study of European news on China’s soft power”. The main research aim of this doctoral project, supervised by Prof. Dr. Sarah Van Leuven and Prof. Dr. Stijn Joye, was to examine the conceptual, textual, production, and societal dimensions involved in European media reporting on China’s soft power campaign and the interactions between these dimensions. To do so, Jingwen applied a mixed-method design combining quantitative content analysis, qualitative frame analysis, and in-depth interviews.
