The increased struggle we have with technology and our love-hate relationship with it.

One of the findings of the recent digimeter study was that we have developed a love-hate relationship with our smartphone and social media. Digital media are so entangled in our daily lives, that we can’t imagine a day without them. Digital media have created a feeling of belonging irrespective of place or time. At the same time, we sometimes wonder if it hasn’t evolved to an excess of screen time or even an addiction towards smartphones and social media. Has the torrent of notifications caused us to experience more stress, do we feel a pressure to respond immediately, do we want to be kept up to date at all time in real time? And does the assumption that all young people are feeling comfortable in their digital worlds match with reality? Those perceptions have led to a lot of questions and concerns, not in the least among parents or educators, who want to know what is the ‘normal’ or ‘healthy’ amount of screen time a day, and what can be done to reduce the negative effects.

During the talk (in Dutch) Bart Vanhaelewyn will gather insights from digimeter, MobileDNA, Apestaartjaren and other research, and searches for ways to restore our digital balance.
